I am 38 years old, so the medical profession considers me to be of advanced maternal age for conceiving a child. Before coming to see Dr. Zhang, my husband and I had tried for nearly a year to get pregnant. During that year, I became pregnant, but I suffered an early miscarriage. After the miscarriage, we tried for another six months to become pregnant without success. We became very discouraged and I was convinced that I may never become pregnant. However, we decided to try acupuncture to see if it could help. When we first met Dr. Zhang, we knew we had come to the right place. Infertility (Natural pregnancy)

Dear Dr. Zhang,   I just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks to you for helping to make my dream come true! I am 40 years old and I have been married for almost 8 years and unable to become pregnant. I have been to more than one doctor, and have, it seems, had every test done. Still, no baby! The last doctor I went to informed me that egg donation would be the only route to use, and to forgo IVF or any fertility drug therapy as they will not work for me.   I did take your card in the lobby of MGH, and had it in my folder, and pulled it out over a month ago. Infertility (IVF)

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Zhang for 8 months, and he has been an incredible acupuncturist and friend. We started seeing Dr. Zhang after the diagnosis of infertility after 6 months of trying to conceive. Although my hormone levels were in normal parameters, my age was 34, and my husband suffered from low sperm count and motility. We wanted to be sure that we were doing everything we could to support the fertility treatments we were undergoing.

Immediately, Dr. Zhang’s acupuncture treatment and encouragement made me feel better and gave me relief from the severe anxiety and depression I was feeling from the rigorous treatments. My husband’s sperm count and motility increased dramatically over the course of our 8 month treatment, starting with an initial count of 1.5 million per m/l and 4% total motility and a total count of 3.3 million, then increasing to 70 million per m/l with over 60% motility with a total count close to 200 million. Of particular importance were the treatments I received before and after embryo transfer, which helped me feel calm and relaxed with a more hopeful outlook.

Dr. Zhang was so encouraging throughout our treatments. He always listened carefully and offered much support and sympathy during the disappointing times. He was so helpful and accommodating with his treatment of us, particularly around the unpredictable schedule of the IVF treatments.

I believe that the acupuncture treatments that we both received helped us to achieve pregnancy with our second IVF attempt. I continue to see Dr. Zhang for treatment to help with the anxiety and discomfort of early pregnancy.  I don’t know what we would do without him!

Habitual Miscarriages

I am a 44 yrs RN. I have been trying to have a baby for almost 5 years but haven’t succeeded. I was able to get my first pregnancy when I was 39, but lost it in very early stage. At the year of 40, I got pregnant two times, one lost immediately, one was able to make 8 weeks but no heart bit and lost again. I tried again last year and did get chemical pregnant by IVF. My doctor also found My FSH was 38. After that, I was referred to Dr. Zhang. After carefully reviewed my history and checked me, Dr. Zhang told me he need to prepare my body firstly and ask me to wait for 2-3 months before I can try again, he did acupuncture once a week for me to balance my body, he also guided me to keep a healthy diet, avoid many bad foods which no body told me before. During the 3 months, I slept much better, I was very relaxed, felling really well and happier, and most important, very positive. And my FSH was down to 9.0 ! We tried then and I was pregnant naturally! Dr. Zhang then saw me once a week for another 6 weeks. After that he told me I am safe and can just call as I need. I was so happy to tell you now that I just had my son last month, one month before my 44^th birthday. I am so lucky to meet Dr. Zhang.

      Infertility (IVF, extra thin lining)

I am a 37 year old woman. I have PCOS but am otherwise in very good health. I came to Dr. Zhang in the spring of 2008 after a failed IVF cycle. (I have two other children one via IUI and one via IVF). When my IVF cycle failed, water in the uterus and a very thin lining (about 5.5) were cited as possible causes. I came to Dr. Zhang in hopes that acupuncture would help thicken my lining. I saw Dr. Zhang throughout the summer of 2008 as I prepared for a FET. My lining increased slightly to the 6-6.3 range (still sub optimal). Although I was on the maximum dose of estrogen my lining stayed around 6.2. My doctors cancelled one planned FET and had me take the max does of injectable estrogen along with suppositories, but my lining stayed at 6.2 during the next cycle. We decided we would try a transfer on my thin lining, but my embryos did not survive the thaw. When we started a fresh IVF cycle in the late summer, my IVF doctors changed my IVF protocol and I continued to see Dr. Zhang once a week. During this cycle my lining reached 7mm triple line. We did a fresh transfer in September and I recently found out that I am pregnant with twins. During my first ultrasound, the technician commented that the heartbeats and the blood flow to the uterus were strong.

Allergy

I started going to Dr. Zhang to get acupuncture for my allergies (I had been on a daily allergy medicine for 5 years which totally dried me out - my hair, my skin - and it was becoming less and less effective in preventing my sinus headaches).  Within the first 5 or 6 appointments I was able to stop taking my medicine completely and now it's been 3 years and I've never had to take anything again.  I still see Dr. Zhang for an appt. every 2 or 3 weeks because I've found the acupuncture to be so incredibly good for stress and total body relaxation which I know I need.

I am a 35-year old RN, I was always 30-40 pounds over weight since my 20th birthday. I am very careful on my diet and excerise a lot, but I will can't lose weight. Tendonitis

I would like to thank you greatly for helping my right medial tendonitis. I was referred to you via a family member, and although I have some basic knowledge of the principles behind acupuncture, I have to be honest that I started treatment with what I can only describe as open minded skepticism. I came to you after two cortisone shots and a round of physical therapy. I cannot claim a miracle cure, but I have noticed a marked improvement. I couldn't throw a ball without pain. Acne Testimonial One

 I am a 25 year old doctoral student who has had chronic and severe eczema since I was a baby. Throughout my life I have dealt with flare-ups of eczema by using cortisone creams recommended by dermatologists but to no avail.  Eczema had continued to dominate portions of skin all over my body and prompt annoyance, physical pain and embarrassment.   More recently, after seeing a dermatologist who recommended I take immune-suppressants (the same medicine they give to transplant recipients so their bodies do not reject the new organ) to reduce my autoimmune response hoping to quell my severe eczema, I realized that I would have to find another mode of treatment!

I decided to try acupuncture with Dr. Zhang to treat my eczema and I am incredibly satisfied with this decision.  I have never had such relief from eczema in my entire life. Dr. Zhang treated me with a combination of acupuncture, herbal tea and diet modifications. After a couple of weeks I noticed that my itching was stopping, the quality of my skin was better and I felt healthier overall. I was amazed a couple of weeks after that when I saw that my skin had substantially cleared and I could see that my eczema was virtually gone from my legs, arms, stomach, face and chest.

I am happy to report that these results have continued as I have tapered off my acupuncture sessions and reduced my herbal tea. I am looking forward to never having to take cortisone creams again! Acne Testimonial Two

I started seeing Dr. Zhang a couple of years ago for acne.  I had decided to get off Benzaclin at the time and thought there had to be a better way to cure acne than using a prescription topical medicine.  I have had acne since my late teens and prescriptions were the only remedy for me for about a decade.  After getting off the medicine I was horrified to be in my early thirties with constant breakouts that would leave dark marks on my skin for many months.  I stopped wearing makeup and was desperate but refused to get back on the medicine.  I was excited to try acupuncture as a therapy and cannot express enough gratitude for the help Dr. Zhang has given me.  Acupuncture really works for this condition and I tell as many people as I can about it and him.  I initially saw Dr. Zhang a couple of times a week, then it went down to once per week, then once every other week.  I also drank a lot of tea in the beginning from herbs he gave me and after 6 months saw such an incredible difference in my skin.  There were actually times when I went into his office with a very large pimple and literally felt it going down after a session.  I still see Dr. Zhang monthly even though I no longer have acne as the treatments continue to give me needed relaxation and I believe they provide value.  I think of acupuncture as an important part of my overall health maintenance as much as exercising and eating right.  I would highly recommend Dr. Zhang to any patient experiencing acne and in need of an effective, non-invasive treatment.  Thank you, Dr. Zhang, for giving me back clear, pretty skin!

Chronic Hives

"I started to break out in hives for no apparent reason, and after numerous

tests that showed everything was 'normal,' my primary care doctor and an

allergist told me I had CIU, chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives).  In

western medicine, there is no known cause or cure for CIU -- the only thing

to do is medicate with antihistamines to manage symptoms and hope they

eventually go away.  By the time I went to see Dr. Zhang, the hives had

spread over my whole body, I was occasionally experiencing facial swelling,

and I was taking 4 antihistamines/8 pills a day.  Through the acupuncture

treatments and herbal remedies with Dr. Zhang, my medicine was cut in half

in just 3 weeks.  Over the next 3 months, the hives steadily retreated and I

was slowly able to get off of all medicine.  I am happy to say I am now

completely free of the hives and have no need for the medicine.  Some people

are skeptical about whether Chinese medicine works, but I have no doubt it

was the herbal tea and acupuncture that cured me of the hives."

I have had cutaneous vasculitis, a rare autoimmune disorder for six years. I have seen multiple specialists over the years, and none were able to offer any treatment aside from steroids (the side effects of which would have been worse than my condition.) I had heard that acupuncture could help with autoimmune disorders, and while skeptical at first, I figured it couldn’t hurt to try, and if it helped at all it would be amazing to have a tool to alleviate my condition. I found Dr. Zhang and was very impressed with his credentials. At my first appointment
he identified several dietary changes that I needed to make, and within two days of my first treatment, I saw a dramatic improvement in my condition. Severe Eczema

I suffered with a very severe case of eczema on my hands for over 7 months. As a massage therapist, this caused me a great amount of stress and worry. I love my work, and was thinking I would not be able to continue because of the pain in my hands. They were cracked and bleeding, with blisters, and some days I couldn’t even close my fist. I tried various medications, and the steroids were the worst, as they thinned my skin and caused more breakouts. Sciatica

This place works miracles! I have a sciatic nerve and it acts up every once and a while. I have been to several Chiropractors and doctors and none knew that to do or could help me and it was miserable. I was recommended acupuncture and tried this place out. It is no frills and a flat fee of 60 bucks but let me tell you, it works miracles. I visit whenever this thing flares up and the Doctor although hard to understand is like a magic touch! Sciatica 2

I became a patient of Dr. Zhang after researching a specialist in Chinese medicine and acupuncture in the west suburban area. Dr. Zhang's credentials from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and his appointments at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital are top notch. Stiff and Tight Neck

Best acupuncture experience I've ever had.  I went with my friend to her acupuncture appointment with John Zhang, who apparently is a faculty member at Harvard Med School.  I have chronic neck pain and have tried acupuncture in the past, but didn’t like my acupuncturist b/c she was more interested in getting paid by my insurance company than helping me.  Anyway, Dr. Zhang offered to treat my neck without an appointment and offered to waive his fee if I didn’t feel better afterward.

My 30 minute session was much more relaxing than with my prior acupuncturist.  Dr. Zhang used heat and performed a massage on my neck after he removed the needles.  My neck felt much better.  

Dr. Zhang then gave me advice on how to find a good acupuncturist in my area and offered to research and find one for me.  I really appreciated his help!

IBS
 

Dear Dr. Zhang,    My daughter Lauren was diagnosed with I.B.S November of 2006. She had a very rough time with stomach pain and was missing a lot of school. It broke my heart as a mother to see my child in such pain. Her Gastroenteroligist  prescribed  her Pamine  which at first helped with the pain enough to get her to school then a second  flair-up 3 weeks later set her over the edge. Again she was out of school. Last summer, after a vacation trip, I suddenly began having  extremely uncomfortable symptoms of what seemed to be a digestive disorder: gas, belching after meals, a feeling of being stuffed, even when I hadn't eaten,

Gallstones Pain

Hypertension

I have been suffering from hypertension for more than 20 years. I have taken different kinds of medicine, my blood pressure is up and down and never gets controlled. Car accident

I sought Dr. Zhang out after exhausting my options with western medicine. A back injury, a bad tooth infection and work stress left me feeling like I was 26 going on 76. I chose to try acupuncture for the first time with Dr. Zhang because of his work at Mass General with Harvard Medical School. Although western medicine wasn’t doing much for me, it gave me comfort that he was versed in both eastern and western practices. I was especially interested in his research on the effect of acupuncture on animals, because the results control for purely psychosomatic benefits.
I walked out of my first visit with Dr. Zhang feeling deeply relaxed and somewhat euphoric, to my surprise. Kind of like after getting out of massage. The long term benefits have  been far more profound though. The improvements were gradual at first, but after one month of regular weekly to bi-weekly visits, I was eating, sleeping and exercising normally all without the medicine it used to take feel well enough to get through the day.

Weight loss and back pain

I had severe back pain for more than 10 years, the surgery did not help me much. I still have very bad pain after surgery. I was also 60 pounds over weight. Chronic pain

Since I began treatment in March with Dr. Zhang, I have been virtually pain free. Sports injury

My left ankle was badly sprained in soccer games, not once but twice. X ray didn't show anything wrong and it took me one year to rehab, unfortunately I still couldn't run very hard anymore since the ankle even the calf got stiff and hurt once a while. Cold and sore throat

Ahh, dr. zhang- man of few words, but he's pretty great. this is my first time trying acupuncture. If I turn up with a baby, well, he works, if not...well, it was interesting. He's a bit abrupt, but I think it's a cultural thing, not a 'tude thing.  I will say, that when I went in the other day, I hadn't evens aid a word to him and he goes " stick out your tongue" which I did, and he said "You have a cold, how long you have cold" I said it had just come on that morning. He could tell by looking at my tongue and asked if I was congested. I said yes, and my throat is killing me too. He stuck some pins at the base of my nostrils, and another on just under my chin. My sinus cleared out instantly, and by the end of the session, my throat pain was gone and never returned.

Pinched nerve and chronic pain

Thanks to Dr. Zhang, I have avoided neck surgery for severe right neural
foraminal narrowing at C5/C6, which was causing chronic pain in my neck and
shoulders, as well as numbness in my right arm and fingers. After two months
of weekly acupuncture visits, all symptoms ceased.

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Zhang for 8 months, and he has been an incredible acupuncturist and friend. We started seeing Dr. Zhang after the diagnosis of infertility after 6 months of trying to conceive. Although my hormone levels were in normal parameters, my age was 34, and my husband suffered from low sperm count and motility. We wanted to be sure that we were doing everything we could to support the fertility treatments we were undergoing.

I knew before even getting married to my husband that we were going to need medical help in order to become pregnant. When we decided to start a family, we went straight to the fertility doctors, and, without any hesitation, did one IVF cycle with ICSI that produced a healthy baby boy 9 months later. The second pregnancy would not be so easy. When we decided to try for baby #2, we went the same route, spoke with the same doctors, and went through the same IVF protocol, since the first time was practically effortless. Unfortunately, the next time around wouldn’t be so smooth. So, we tried again… and again. After the failure  of the third IVF cycle, the conversation with the doctor was an emotional one for me. Conceiving my son was so easy, then why is this so difficult? While my husband was the basis for our initial need for IVF, now it seems that I was producing oblong eggs that spawned less than par embryos. This is where embryo donation came into question. If I hadn’t produced a healthy child in the past, I would take this into consideration, but just 3 years prior I was simply able to make an adequate embryo with my own egg, and felt I should still be able to do the same for the next pregnancy. I asked if there was anything different I could do. I was already eating well, exercising, but that didn’t seem to be the answer. For the 4th IVF cycle, I tried acupuncture with Dr. Zhang. Never having done acupuncture before, I was excited at the prospect of trying something new. We met for several months before as I was gearing up for the 4th IVF cycle. The retrieval produced more eggs than the past cycles, and the embryos were of such good quality, that the protocol called for a cycle day 5 transfer. Unfortunately, the embryos didn’t take hold, and the 4th IVF cycle didn’t produce a pregnancy. I did believe, though, that the ‘normal’ shaped eggs, and consequent great quality embryos produced were a result of the acupuncture that I was receiving the months prior.  The results were apparent, and I went back for more for cycle #5. I am a 44 yrs RN. I have been trying to have a baby for almost 5 years but haven’t succeeded. I was able to get my first pregnancy when I was 39, but lost it in very early stage. At the year of 40, I got pregnant twice, one lost immediately, one was able to make 8 weeks but no heart bit and lost again. I tried again last year and did get chemical pregnant by IVF but lost it again. My doctor also found My FSH was 38. After that, I was referred to Dr. Zhang. After carefully reviewed my history and checked me, Dr. Zhang told me he need to prepare my body firstly and ask me to wait for 2-3 months before I can try again, he did acupuncture once a week for me to balance my body, he also guided me to keep a healthy diet, avoid many bad foods which no body told me before. During the 3 months, I slept much better, I was very relaxed, felling really well and happier, and most important, very positive. And my FSH was down to 9.0 ! I am a 37 year old woman. I have PCOS but am otherwise in very good health. I came to Dr. Zhang in the spring of 2008 after a failed IVF cycle. (I have two other children one via IUI and one via IVF). When my IVF cycle failed, water in the uterus and a very thin lining (about 5.5) were cited as possible causes. I came to Dr. Zhang in hopes that acupuncture would help thicken my lining. I saw Dr. Zhang throughout the summer of 2008 as I prepared for a FET. My lining increased slightly to the 6-6.3 range (still sub optimal). Although I was on the maximum dose of estrogen my lining stayed around 6.2. My doctors cancelled one planned FET and had me take the max does of injectable estrogen along with suppositories, but my lining stayed at 6.2 during the next cycle. We decided we would try a transfer on my thin lining, but my embryos did not survive the thaw. When we started a fresh IVF cycle in the late summer, my IVF doctors changed my IVF protocol and I continued to see Dr. Zhang once a week. During this cycle my lining reached 7mm triple line. We did a fresh transfer in September and I recently found out that I am pregnant with twins. During my first ultrasound, the technician commented that the heartbeats and the blood flow to the uterus were strong.

Dear Dr. Zhang, Bill and I cannot tell you how thrilled we are with the care you have provided us over the past several months. We would love to offer our story as a way to encourage other couples who are currently on the rollercoaster of trying to conceive.

After a year and a half of trying to get pregnant my husband and I decided to seek professional help through a fertility center. We both underwent extensive testing and eventually diagnosed with male infertility. IVF was proposed as the best suitable option for our situation. In July I took my first round of Clomid, which did not make me ovulate.  Needless to say, I was feeling frustrated and confused and decided to seek alternative treatment. I met with Dr. Zhang and was instantly comforted and impressed with the comprehensive medical history he took and care he demonstrated while listening to my story.  Much to my surprise, I got a period on my own after the first visit!  I was instantly a firm believer in the power and effectiveness of TCM.

Habitual Miscarriages

I am a 39 years old pharmacist from Boston. I have tried 3 years for fertility but ended with 3 miscarriages, the longest one is 7 weeks. I started my second round of Clomid and was upset to find out that it didn’t work; while I had one healthy follicle, my lining was too thin (a common side effect of Clomid).  My OBGYN recommended I schedule and appointment with a Reproductive Endocrinologist.  I went to see Dr. Zhang and told him the upsetting news.  As always, he was sympathetic and encouraging, recommending that I still try this month.  Sure enough, two weeks later, while anxiously awaiting to get my period so I could start hormone injections, I found out I was pregnant!  When I told Dr. Zhang he was elated.

Dr. Zhang is an extremely knowledgeable, skilled, and compassionate doctor.  His genuine confidence and care are calming and reassuring.  I would highly recommend him to anyone who is struggling with infertility.

Habitual Miscarriages

I am a 39 years old pharmacist from Boston. I have tried 3 years for fertility but ended with 3 miscarriages, the longest one is 7 weeks. I have been to couple doctors but they couldn’t find anything wrong. My cycle was regular and my FSH was a little bit high. I was then referred to Dr. Zhang by my friend who just got pregnant from the help of him. After two months of seeing Dr. Zhang, I was pregnant! Dr. Zhang then told me he needed to see me again especially the first 3 weeks which the most miscarriages happen. I went to see him once a week for 3 weeks, I was able to see heart bit in the week 3 which I never saw from my past pregnancy. After that Dr. Zhang told me to still keep calm and relaxed, I only saw him once and my whole pregnancy went very well. I am so happy to have my daughter now, thanks to Dr. Zhang.

I just wanted to thank you so very much for helping me get pregnant. I truly believe it was the acupuncture more than anything that worked this month!  I am 33, and had been trying to get pregnant after having a miscarriage last fall. In March  2010, I started my first round of clomid. I had terrible side effects ( depression, hot flashes, anxiety, sleep troubles) and I did not get pregnant. I also think I was still dealing with sadness and stress over my miscarriage and overall did not feel myself. I felt very out of balance and very emotional.

I started seeing Dr. Zhang right before I started my second round of Clomid. After just a few sessions  with Dr. Zhang, I started to sleep better and felt so much better overall. I was not as stressed and finally felt like myself again. I did not feel as anxious about getting pregnant. My family members even commented that I seemed so much better. I ovulated 3 days earlier than the previous month and just felt so much more positive.  I had no side effects at all from the clomid. The previous month my side effects were so bad that I contemplated that I would stop trying to get pregnant.

 
I am so thrilled to say that I got pregnant! I really believe it was the acupuncture and other suggestions that Dr. Zhang gave me that helped me get pregnant. I was so out of balance before I started seeing him. I feel so much more confident about this pregnancy because I feel like I am starting it off very healthy and balanced.       Infertility (IVF, extra thin lining)

I am a 37 year old woman. I have PCOS but am otherwise in very good health. I came to Dr. Zhang in the spring of 2008 after a failed IVF cycle. (I have two other children one via IUI and one via IVF). When my IVF cycle failed, water in the uterus and a very thin lining (about 5.5) were cited as possible causes. I came to Dr. Zhang in hopes that acupuncture would help thicken my lining. I saw Dr. Zhang throughout the summer of 2008 as I prepared for a FET. My lining increased slightly to the 6-6.3 range (still sub optimal). Although I was on the maximum dose of estrogen my lining stayed around 6.2. My doctors cancelled one planned FET and had me take the max does of injectable estrogen along with suppositories, but my lining stayed at 6.2 during the next cycle. We decided we would try a transfer on my thin lining, but my embryos did not survive the thaw. When we started a fresh IVF cycle in the late summer, my IVF doctors changed my IVF protocol and I continued to see Dr. Zhang once a week. During this cycle my lining reached 7mm triple line. We did a fresh transfer in September and I recently found out that I am pregnant with twins. During my first ultrasound, the technician commented that the heartbeats and the blood flow to the uterus were strong.
